In 1951 America, studious, law-abiding sophmore Marcus Messner attends the conservative Winesburg College in Ohio instead of his native New Jersey, because of his father who has suddenly become riddled with fear of the dangers of adult life and the world that await his beloved son. The fear arises from love and pride, but only instills anger in the young and intense Marcus. In the midwestern college far from home, Marcus has to find his own way.
