DCI Harry Nelson has been receiving anonymous threatening letters. They are reminiscent of ones he has received in the past, from the person who drew him into a case that’s haunted him for years. Forensic archeologist Dr Ruth Galloway is working on a dig when bones are found on the site. They are identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a twelve-year-old girl who disappeared thirty years ago. As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to the first investigation that drew Ruth and Nelson together.
