Lady Mason was the young second wife of on old land-owning widower, Joseph Mason. They lived at Orley Farm, while the adult son lived in the main family estate, Groby. Shortly after their son Lucius was born, Joseph died. Contrary to what Joseph had told his elder son, a codicil to his will left Orley Farm to his infant son. A bitterly fought court case confirmed the codicil. Twenty years later, when this book is set, it is challenged again: Lady Mason may be charged with forgery or perjury.
