Eighteen-year-old Rosemary Savage has recently lost her mother and is newly arrived in New York City from Australia. She ducks into a used bookshop, becomes mesmerized, and decides that she has to work there, no matter what it takes. She is reluctantly hired by the owner, George Pike.
