Pan Books, 2007.
Aus dem Englischen..
Beautiful Sylvia Kaye and another young woman had been seen hitching a ride not long before Sylvia's bludgeoned body is found outside a pub in Woodstock, near Oxford. Morse is sure the other hitchhiker can tell him much of what he needs to know. But his confidence is shaken by the cool inscrutability of the girl he's certain was Sylvia's companion on that ill-fated September evening. To grasp the painful truth, and act upon it, requires from Morse the last atom of his professional discipline.

The murder of Yvonne Harrison had left Thames Valley CID baffled. A year after the dreadful crime they are still no nearer to making an arrest. Chief Inspector Morse is adamant that he will not lead the re-investigation, despite the entreaties of Chief Superintendent Strange and dark hints of some new evidence? Why, if he refuses to take on the case officially, does he seem to be carrying out his own private enquiries? For Sergeant Lewis this is yet another example of the unsettling behaviour his chief has been displaying of late.

Chief Inspector Morse and Sergeant Lewis are called in when too little progress has been made on an Oxford murder. Within days they uncover startling information about the victim, leading to a staircase in Wolsey College and to Edward Brooks, who subsequently disappears. Then another body is discovered and the list of suspects lengthens, although each seems to have an alibi.

The way through the woods :

Crown, 1993.

While taking a holiday, Inspector Morse can't stop himself from snooping a bit in regard to a mysterious female guest at the hotel. Morse's busman's holiday is cut short, however, when a newspaper prints a poem that sparks renewed interest in his year-old missing person case. The new investigation is fraught with poetry analysis, birdwatchers, and pornography, and it hinges on a surprising look-alike. Some strong language.

Treatment for a perforated ulcer was later pronounced successful. As Morse begins his recovery he comes across an account of the investigation and the trial that followed Joanna Franks' death. Then, two days later, a naked and battered corpse is dragged from the River Cherwell. Morse is determined to prove the link.
